Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique

Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique may be local to Denton, but they embody the basic Midwest emo sound like a native while adding touches of 90s grunge, alt pop and 00s post-punk nostalgia and violin to cook up their signature sound. The recipe is a unique one and is guaranteed to be a DFW favorite and beyond with patience and the right opportunities.

Oolong

This outfit ventured all the way from Long Island, NY, with the lead singer sporting a cast on his left arm and a trombone in his right hand. Oolong's style is essentially American Football's self-titled LP1 as it would be interpreted by Death From Above 1979. If it existed, their music would be right at home on the soundtrack to Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 6.

Upsetting

Upsetting's set was comprised of wonderfully in-your-face heavy yet digestible Weezer-like emo interspersed between impromptu sketch-like humor. This band's main draw wasn't only their music, but their energy. Upsetting is a complete stage package with more than just music to offer.

Newgrounds Death Rugby

The night's headliner, South Carolina's gritty indie-emo act Newgrounds Death Rugby, fuse the most quintessential, crashing and feedback-laden mid-00s guitars with vocals that oscillate wildly between reserved serenading and protest-like shouts. This was the perfect match made not in heaven, but in Charleston and thank God they came to Denton.
