[Exclusive Interview] Getting to Know gyun: Vulnerability, Vibes, and Vision

By:  Deborah Rodriguez

With a sound as genre-defying as his story, gyun is carving a lane of his own in Seoul’s music scene. The singer-songwriter first caught attention in 2019 through a collaboration with Mommy Son & Friends and has since cultivated a loyal following via a string of emotionally rich SoundCloud releases. Blending elements of EDM, rock, hip-hop, and R&B, gyun’s music explores vulnerability through melodic vocal flows and raw, introspective lyricism—solidifying his spot in the ever-evolving anti-pop space

Now signed to Beautiful Noise, the independent label founded by Mommy Son, gyun has continued to refine his artistry through his two-part EP series, PESUDO 1.0 and PESUDO 2.0. Each project dives deeper into his emotional landscape and sonic experimentation, signaling an exciting evolution in his musical journey.

Melody Magazine sat down with gyun to talk about his latest releases, the stories behind them, and what’s fueling his creative fire as he steps further into the spotlight.

Could you please take a moment to say hello and introduce yourself to Melody Magazine?

Hello everyone, I go by the name of gyun. I make all kinds of music. Nice to meet you all!

What influenced you to pursue music as a career?

Music was always there growing up. Growing up in America definitely inspired me a lot. I went on a lot of road trips and during those times I remember listening to Skrillex and a lot of electronic music. So that inspired me as an artist to make–not necessarily electronic music–but music that pushes boundaries.

Is there a particular message you want to deliver through your music?

My name in Korean means "balance" and I use my music to balance the highs and lows of my life. I want people to feel the same emotions as me and ultimately feel mature as an individual.

Tell us about your latest EP, “PSEUDO 2.0.” How does it differ from “PSEUDO 1.0”?

In the first EP, I talked about the chaotic nature of date life. Accompanied by heavy synthesizers and 808 bass. PSEUDO 2.0 is more focused on my personal health and personal issues, and the genre I chose was punk rock because I felt it was the most suitable for the themes in this EP.

Which one of your songs would you recommend to someone who is listening to you for the first time?

I definitely recommend “PESUDOSCIENCE” from the first EP and “RABBITHOLE” from the second EP. Sonically, I feel like “PESUDOSCIENCE” is the epitome of gyun because there are all of these different elements from different music genres mashed up together. Lyrically, “RABBITHOLE” because I just wanted to talk about the pain and the struggles of living as an early 20's musician.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of music?

Yes! I really enjoy watching basketball. I like the Knicks. I really wish they would go past the second round, but they probably won't. I also really enjoy watching anime.

Who are some of your favorite artists at the moment?

For now, it's gotta be Beabadoobee. Her last album was really great. The artist Destin Conrad, I enjoy his music a lot

Are there any artists that inspire your music style?

Definitely Skrillex and My Chemical Romance. Maybe The Weeknd, because he speaks about his addictions and toxic lifestyle so I relate to that a lot.

Do you have any dream collaborations or goals as an artist?

For now, my goal is to make a breakthrough outside of Korea. I want to reach a global audience. Perhaps, having a performance in the States in the near future. Long term goal, maybe–the VMAs! Or the Nickeledoeon iHeart Radio Awards.

Do you have any future projects coming up that you’re excited about?

Yes, I am planning to release at least one more project this year. I am working with my best friend LiTrella, he is a producer/R&B singer for the past few months and we are paying our respects to the soul club scene. The project is going to be called Dog days and it's going to be an r&b and hip hop album. It will be released during the hottest days of the whole year.

Is there anything we have left out that you would like to share with your fans?

I just want to thank everyone because I am still a small artist but I have received an incredible amount of support. So thank you everyone, and thank you Melody Magazine for having me.
