New Beginnings With DoHanse

By. Alicia Zamora

Formerly known for his role as a member of the K-pop group Victon, Do Hanse was born and raised in South Korea and he is best known as a rapper, singer, and songwriter. Earlier this year, he announced that he would be separating from the group to work on becoming a soloist and growing as a solo act. On Tuesday, October 6, 2023, he announced a single coming out under the title “Gummy Bear” which consists of two songs. The full double single dropped on October 23rd.

The double single “Gummy Bear” is his first piece of work to be introduced since his signing with his new company Double Dial Music. Separating from a group that you spent a long time with must have been very difficult, but being able to expand and show the world what you're capable of outside of K-pop is also an exciting prospect and it's something that he did well on. “Gummy Bear” is his first single EP as a soloist, and the features include BIGONE for track 1 and Dive for track 2.

Take a bite

In Track 1 “Gummy Bear” (feat. BIGONE), the song itself feels very nostalgic. It reminds me of turning on the TV in the morning and hearing my favorite cartoon introduction. It gives a different vibe from what he was doing for Victon. In a way, it feels as if he is finally able to express himself and release the music he truly wants to release.  With the start of the song coming strong with his high vocals mixed with a bit of pop-punk sound, it sounds really sweet and catchy. It’s the type of song to make you get out of your seat to dance and bop your head to.

A music video was released for “Gummy Bear” and instantly what catches your attention is the colorful and aesthetic visuals. It’s a bit different but a good type of difference nevertheless. It takes me back to the early 2000s vibe. The graphics in the video with the gummy bears trying to crawl out of the cups tie it all together. The music video itself is visually creative. You can see how much effort and time was put into the making of it.

Moving on to the last and second track “Unlucky Girl” (feat. Dive), it gives more of an upbeat vibe. Both songs seem similar with just a bit of a different tone. This one gives me more of a punk ecstatic vibe – the type to make you feel like you're playing a guitar in your room and jumping all over the bed.

Overall, Do Hanse’s catchy and compelling melodies caught everyone's attention with this double-single album. The pop-punk-based sounds for both songs mixed with his vocal tones create an ecstatic vibe which brings the album together. Both songs have catchy choruses and lyrics that will surely stay stuck in your head.
